Ryan

50- The Jerk* (Ryan)

The FUAR crew celebrates the big 5-oh this week - by making absolutely no mention of it! What gets mentioned plenty is the 1979 classic Steve Martin comedy, The Jerk! Among the aspects mentioned are the enduring, one-upsmanship style of comedy, the film's place as a coming of age tale, and, in this week's Challenge, stealing toys from sick children!

We'd love to hear from you! Email us about our picks at fuarock@gmail.com.

47- Warrior (Ryan)

The beads of sweat pour to the ground, the muscles pull and tear with the strain of the fighter's exertions, the bones creak and threaten to break as pressure is applied, pressure like none they have felt before -

"Michael! Please stop practicing your wrestling moves on us! We have a podcast to record!"

"Oh, right. My bad, guys."

42- Mad Max: Fury Road (Ryan)

Oh, yes, I recall the day when the FUAR crew rolled into town, preaching the gospel of the latest installment of the Mad Max franchise starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. I was living under such a rock as you had never seen before, but the FUAR crew dug me out from under it. I am forever indebted to them.

37- Magnolia (Ryan)

Ryan kicks off a month of FUAR's favorite films with the 1999 Paul Thomas Anderson ensemble drama, Magnolia. Will the rest of the crew agree, or will Ryan take to the roof to be murdered by his mother's shotgun?

33- Whiplash (Ryan)

...and we're back...again!

The FUARers return and easily fall back into stride by taking on one of last year's best picture nominees, the Miles Teller/J.K. Simmons starring, drum-beating, chair-throwing Whiplash! The gang discusses the film's excellent editing and modern fairy tale storytelling before putting their biorhythmic abilities to the test in this week's Challenge. It's a return to form, and a sign of great things to come!

30- Coffee and Cigarettes (Ryan)

Great Picture

James sits this one out, leaving a veritable menage a trois of Ryan, Michael, and Steven to review the Jim Jarmusch cult classic, comedic/dramatic account of human nature and relationships. However, James does make a brief appearance...to be the victim of the GREATEST PRANK CALL IN HISTORY.

26- Gattaca (Ryan)

Great Picture

Ryan pulls the crew back down his beloved sci-fi well to watch what he believes to be an overlooked 90s classic starring Ethan Hawke, Jude Law, and Uma Thurman. A rousing discussion ensues, followed by a challenge and a pick that could change the fate of the crew for years to come.

23- Cool Hand Luke (Ryan)

Great Picture

"James: I'm so desperately lonely?" "Fuargo! Fuargo!" The guys pay a vigorous game of FUARGO to determine the challenge champion this week, amidst some heady discussion of the religious themes of Cool Hand Luke.

20- Sunshine (Ryan)

Great Picture

It is the year 20XX. Tensions are high and friendships are frayed among the once brotherly comrades known as FUAR. Weeks pass, then months without nary a recording as Ryan labors fruitlessly in the FUAR engine room, endlessly toiling and failing to figure out how to work a Blu-Ray. The rest are supportive at first, but quickly grow weary as what was supposed to be a friendly gathering has turned into nothing short of a Mad Maxian dystopia.

Finally, long after all hope seemed lost, Ryan reaches into the depths of the FUAR equipment closet and pulls out an old, unused Blu-Ray player. Brushing off the dust, he plugs it in and prays. And play it does.

So if you wake up one morning, and it's a particularly beautiful day, and there's a new episode of From Under a Rock, you'll know they made it.

15- Sgt. Bilko (Ryan)

Great Picture

Ryan dug back into the recesses of his memory and pulled out this critically panned Steve Martin, 90s comedy - and risks the lives of his fellow FUAR crew members in the process! This leading-man focused, screwball comedy gets run through the vigorous rigor of the bigger movie pickers with no guarantee that it, or the FUAR crew, will make it through to the other side. If they make it to next week, be sure to tune in and join the discussion by writing in to fuarock@gmail.com or tweeting us @FuaRockPodcast.
